What Is a Pip in Forex? Pip Value and How to Calculate It

A pip in forex is the standard unit of price movement: 0.0001 for most currency pairs and 0.01 for yen pairs. On EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10 per standard lot, $1 per mini lot and $0.10 per micro lot. Pip value equals pip size times position size, converted to your account currency.

Every forex price move, spread and stop loss is measured in pips, so you need to know what one pip is worth in your account. A pip is 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs, and it is worth $10 per standard lot on EUR/USD. This guide gives the formula, worked examples and real broker costs. It also shows how brokers quote the forex spread in pips.

What Is a Pip in Forex?

A pip is the unit used to measure price change in a currency pair. Most pairs move in steps of 0.0001, so one pip is the fourth decimal place. Yen pairs use 0.01, the second decimal place.

Many guides explain the term as "percentage in point" (Source: Fortrade). Because major pairs carry four decimals, one pip is a move in the final digit (Source: Interactive Brokers).

  • EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0860: that is 10 pips.
  • USD/JPY moves from 150.25 to 150.35: that is 10 pips.

Pip size stays the same at every lot size. Only the money value changes.

Why Traders Use Pips

Pips give you one unit that works across pairs. A 25 pip stop means 25 standard steps of price movement on any pair.

Brokers also quote spreads in pips, and strategies describe targets and stops in pips. You need the unit to read any of them.

Pip vs Pipette vs Point: What Is the Difference?

A pipette is one tenth of a pip. Many brokers quote a fifth decimal on EUR/USD (1.08505) and a third decimal on yen pairs (150.253). That extra digit is the pipette in forex, also called a fractional pip.

MetaTrader calls the smallest step a point. With five-digit pricing, MT5 counts ten points to every pip (Source: MQL5). On a four-digit quote, one pip equals one point. In a point vs pip comparison, the pip is the trader's unit and the point is the platform's unit.

UnitEUR/USD SizeExample
Pip0.00011.08500 to 1.08510
Pipette (fractional pip)0.000011.08500 to 1.08501

A common slip is typing a 20 pip stop as 20 points in MT5. That sets a 2 pip stop.

Pips on Gold, Indices and Crypto

The pip is a forex convention. Index CFDs usually quote index points, and crypto quotes dollars.

Gold varies by broker. VT Markets counts a gold pip as a one cent price move, which makes a 100 oz lot worth $1.00 per pip (Source: VT Markets). The same gold move can show a very different pip count at another broker. Read your contract specification before sizing a gold trade.

How Much Is One Pip Worth? Pip Value by Lot Size

On EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10 on a standard lot, $1 on a mini lot and $0.10 on a micro lot. City Index puts a standard lot at $10 per pip on a four-decimal pair (Source: City Index).

0.5050,000$5.00$50.00
0.10 (mini)10,000$1.00$10.00
0.01 (micro)1,000$0.10$1.00

To convert pips to dollars, multiply the pip count by the pip value. A 30 pip gain on 0.10 lot is 30 × $1.00 = $30.

Why Pip Value Changes

The $10 figure holds only when USD is the quote currency. On USD/JPY, a standard lot pip is ¥1,000, so its dollar value moves with the rate.

At an example rate of 150.00, one pip is $6.67. At 140.00, it is $7.14. Your risk per pip changes even though your lot size does not.

How to Calculate Pip Value (Step by Step)

Multiply the pip size by your position size, then convert the result to your account currency.

  1. Find the pip size: 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for yen pairs.
  2. Multiply by position size in units. On EUR/USD, a 100,000 unit position times 0.0001 is $10 per pip. On USD/JPY, the same size times 0.01 is ¥1,000 per pip (Source: Interactive Brokers).
  3. Convert to your account currency if the quote currency is different.

This is the pip value formula in full. Some short guides divide the pip size by the exchange rate instead. That shortcut returns the base currency value. For EUR/USD at an example rate of 1.0800, it gives about €9.26, not $10.

Pip Value for Yen and Cross Pairs

JPY pip value on USD/JPY is ¥1,000 per standard lot. At an example rate of 150.00, ¥1,000 ÷ 150.00 = $6.67.

For EUR/GBP, one pip is £10. At an example GBP/USD rate of 1.3000, that is £10 × 1.3000 = $13.00.

Pip Value for Non-USD Accounts

On a EUR account trading EUR/USD, convert the $10 pip at 1.0800: $10 ÷ 1.0800 = €9.26.

On an INR account, multiply the USD value by the USD/INR rate. At an example rate of 88.00, $10 becomes ₹880 per pip.

Check Your Maths With a Forex Pip Calculator

A forex pip calculator asks for four inputs: the pair, your lot size, your account currency and the current rate. Use one to confirm your hand calculation before you trade.

If the calculator and your formula disagree, check the account currency and the lot size first. Those two inputs cause most errors.

Pip Value Table for Major Pairs

Only pairs with USD as the quote currency give a flat $10 per standard lot. Other pairs move with the exchange rate.

How Pips Measure Spread and Commission

Brokers quote spread in pips, and you can convert commission into pips to see your all-in cost. Divide the round turn commission by the pip value.

For IC Markets Raw Spread, that is $7.00 ÷ $10 = 0.7 pips on a standard EUR/USD lot. Add the 0.1 pip average spread and the all-in cost is 0.8 pips, or $8.00 (Source: IC Markets official site, October 2026). Our guide to forex commission covers per side and round turn fees in detail.

Fusion Markets says its all-in cost is roughly 0.5 pips on the Zero account and 0.9 pips on Classic (Source: Fusion Markets official site, October 2026).

Why Cost in Pips Matters

A trader who targets 5 pips per trade gives up 0.9 pips, or 18% of the target, on a 0.9 pip all-in account. On a 0.5 pip account, the cost is 10% of the same target.

The shorter your target, the more the all-in pip cost matters.

Using Pips for Position Sizing and Risk

Position size equals your risk amount divided by stop loss pips times pip value per lot. This keeps risk per trade fixed whatever the pair.

Lots = risk amount ÷ (stop pips × pip value per lot)

Example: a $10,000 account risks 1%, or $100. On EUR/USD with a 25 pip stop, lots = $100 ÷ (25 × $10) = 0.40 lot. A 30 pip gain on 0.40 lot then pays 30 × $4.00 = $120.

A Costly Pip Value Mistake

A trader treats every pip as $10 and uses 0.40 lot on EUR/GBP with a 25 pip stop. At an example GBP/USD rate of 1.3000, the real pip value is $13.00 per lot. The stop now risks 25 × $13.00 × 0.40 = $130, which is 30% above the $100 plan. The correct size is $100 ÷ (25 × $13.00) = 0.31 lot.

Stops Are Not Guarantees

On 15 January 2015, the Swiss National Bank dropped its CHF 1.20 per euro floor (Source: SNB announcement). Price feeds showed lows anywhere from 0.85 down to 0.70. A fall to 0.85 is about 3,500 pips, so a 100 pip stop could not guarantee a 100 pip loss.

Pips set your risk per trade. Margin sets how much of the account the trade locks up. Our guide to forex margin, free margin and margin calls covers that side.

Conclusion

A pip is 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs. Its value equals pip size times position size, converted to your account currency. On EUR/USD that is $10 per standard lot, but yen and cross pairs differ.

Use pips to compare broker costs, as the 0.5 to 0.9 pip range above shows, and to size every trade. Check the pip value for each pair before you place an order.
